Choose an Engagement Ring
Shopping for an engagement ring doesn't have to be a dreaded experience. With the right amount of knowledge about what to look for in a ring, coupled with your excitement about asking the girl of your dreams to marry you, this can be an enjoyable exercise matching your newly discovered ring expertise with the money you've got available to spend. In this article, you'll learn the most important things to consider when choosing an engagement ring for your beloved.

  1. 1
Be familiar with the terms that you'll be confronted with when shopping for a ring.
Be familiar with the terms that you'll be confronted with when shopping for a ring.
Be familiar with the terms that you'll be confronted with when shopping for a ring. Giving the impression that you know what you're looking for will increase your confidence and help you to ward off any disreputable ring sellers. Here are some of the terms to be familiar with:
  2.
    • Band: The band is the circular part of the ring that sits around the finger. It's usually made from gold, silver, or platinum, although it can be made from some other combination of metals. Gold is yellow-orange in its natural state and is normally alloyed with another metal for durability. Some prefer the lighter yellow color of less-pure gold such as 14K or 10K. "White gold" is gold alloyed with metals purposely to give the mixture an off-white color and must be plated with another metal--rhodium is common--for a bright silvery appearance. The plating wears off; some jewelers will replate their rings from time to time for free. Platinum is hard, strong and naturally silvery but will dull slightly from a mirror finish over time with wear, which is not necessarily a problem. Since a gold setting will make a diamond look very slightly yellowish, it is a waste of money to buy a very high color grade diamond to put in it.
    • Setting: The setting refers to the piece that holds the gemstone in place, which is attached to the band. The setting can be "pronged" or "invisible".[1] Some rings combine a platinum setting with a gold band for the special background color of gold and the contrast, lack of diamond-tinting, and strength of platinum. A setting with a bezel, or at least six prongs for some redundancy, can be safer for a ring that is likely to be worn during significant activity.
    • Gemstone: The gemstone is the feature piece of the ring, usually a diamond. Occasionally, this is facetiously referred to as a "rock". The bigger the stone, the better according to many, although it's more important to go with your girlfriend's personality and preferences rather than assuming this. The gemstone doesn't have to be a diamond (see below) but reasons for deviating from this should be good ones!
    • The 4 C's: These are the carat, color, clarity and cut of the gemstone (usually a diamond).
    • The 5th C: Cost. A cubic zirconia can be beautiful and indistinguishable from a diamond only by a jeweler or other expert. It is softer than a real diamond so it may dull over the years. Lab Diamonds are another great alternative to traditional diamonds. Generally cost 5-10% of what a traditional diamond would, and looking just a beautiful, they definitely deserve some research. A rhodium-plated silver ring can be indistinguishable (except for the identifying mark an honest seller should put on the inside) from a rhodium-plated white-gold one. These can be a good option for a couple with little money up front. An alternative is a smallish real diamond (the price goes up very fast with size, so a very nice one of less than a half-carat, whose face area will be more than half of that of a one-carat diamond, will be a few hundred dollars) in a simple real gold ring.
  3. 2
    Choose a good jeweler.
    Choose a good jeweler.
Choose a good jeweler. The main thing to remember here is that expensive doesn't necessarily equate with being the ideal jeweler. Look for a store that makes you feel comfortable, where the staff are pleasant and helpful, and where the advice they provide gels with you. As well, be sure to look somewhere that fits within your budget range; this avoids the inevitable disappointment at finding something that would be "just perfect if it didn't cost so much". If you can, check that the jeweler is registered with a society, association, or organization that regulates, certifies, etc., jewelers, such as the National Association of Goldsmiths in the UK.[2].
    • Ask around your married friends or your family for recommendations on a good, trusted jeweler. Obviously, this will mean they'll know what you're up to, although you can just say that you want to buy a nice piece of jewelery.
    • An online jeweler such as James Allen or Blue Nile can be a good option if you're willing to accept a little less "hand-holding" for a better price. (You might consider this an advantage as a low-pressure sales environment, but a good retailer shouldn't pressure you, either.) Be sure to check that the jeweler has an excellent reputation because a customer could be at much greater risk of subtle fraud with diamonds and precious metal than with most other products.
    • A mock ring till the two of you go shopping together
A mock ring till the two of you go shopping together
If you're happier proposing first and shopping for a ring with your fiancée, take her preferences for the store into account as well. This is easier where you'd prefer that her choice and tastes are fully accounted for; it's just as romantic, but it means you'll need to provide a mock-ring for the engagement, and explain to her that you'd rather the two of you choose the ring together.
    • Another thing to discuss with the jeweler is the ability to custom design the wedding ring to match the engagement ring. You might like to think ahead to this eventuality because it can be a stunning combination to have both rings matching well together.
  4. 3
    Find out her tastes.
    Find out her tastes.
Find out her tastes. If you're purchasing the ring without her, choosing one will be will more difficult where the ring is a surprise because obviously you won't be able to ask her. Do keep in mind that nowadays, many women prefer to be part of a joint decision to purchase a ring, so if you find it really difficult to know her style and taste, provide a temporary ring and tell her that you'll choose the real one together. Some of the ways to try and work out her taste include:
    • Asking her about rings in general. If you're going past a jewelery store pretend to be interested in a watch. Then casually drop a comment about the styles of rings, saying you like a certain type and asking her what she likes. If you're very good, she won't notice the ruse. If you're not so good, she'll probably tweak but she still won't know when! Other ways of getting her to talk about engagement rings is to make a comment about a friend's engagement ring and to ask her preferences at the same time.
    • Ask her family for ideas. This will depend on whether or not you want them to know before she does, of course.
    • Another ruse is to have her friends take her into a store to ask her "just for fun". You'll need to have absolute trust in them to keep quiet and to pull this off. It's not a good option if you'd prefer to keep it quiet until the moment of the proposal.
    • Sum up her tastes from the clothes she wears and her existing jewelery. Your in the best position to know whether she likes plain, fancy, patterns, large or small fashion statements. Is she traditional, classic, contemporary, or way out there? Use what you do know about her fashion preferences to your own advantage.
    • Is she an impassioned supporter of Fair Trade and human rights? Be sure to look for recycled gold and conflict-free diamonds as part of your choosing process.
  5. 4
    Fix your budget.
    Fix your budget.
Fix your budget. There is a tradition that holds that a man should spend two months of his salary on the engagement ring. Whether or not you do this will depend on your wish to conform to tradition. What does matter is that you select a ring according to what you can afford, so have a good idea of this amount before searching.
    • Let your jeweler know your price range so that he or she can show you a variety of rings that fall within that range.
    • Keep in mind the possibility of having an engagement ring customized. Talk to the jeweler about the price options, the timing, and the styles that are possible.
  6. 5
Will the ring fit in with her lifestyle?
Will the ring fit in with her lifestyle?
Check the practicality of the ring. If your girlfriend is a real outdoorsy type, consider a ring that is able to cope with the wear and tear of constant activities. The higher the positioning of the gemstone on the ring, the easier it is for it to get caught on clothes, gear, hair, etc. and the greater likelihood that it'll get knocked about. Look for a lower gemstone setting for an active girl, and a higher setting for a fashionista or glamor girl.
    • Obviously your girlfriend can also remove the ring, but the desirability of the shape and size of the ring will often be proportionate to her outdoor interests, as a girl who is always on-the-go will be more likely to prefer a compact, less obtrusive style of ring than a girl who is highly fashion conscious and puts a lot of effort into preparing her outfits.
    • Read How to figure out her ring size so that you get it right if you're not choosing together.
  7. 6
    Check durability.
    Check durability.
Check durability. The durability of the band is important, as constant rubbing and knocking from daily activities will eventually wear down the band. And office work is a killer, with paper acting as a mild abrasive on gold bands. If you can afford it, platinum is the preferred choice for wedding bands as it is more durable than gold.[3] Titanium and steel are also fairly resistant, while the purer the gold, the softer it is and more prone to wearing.
  8. 7
    Know your diamonds.
    Know your diamonds.
Know your diamonds. Diamonds tend to be the traditional engagement ring choice, because they are enduring, and match everything. Only deviate from a diamond if you know that your girlfriend loves another stone much, much more, or has voiced her intense dislike of diamonds. When choosing a diamond, be aware of the "Four C's", as follows:
    • Carat: This refers to the unit measurement of the diamond, and refers to weight (not size). Every carat has 100 points. Engagement rings are often 1 carat but the ring you choose will obviously depend on your budget. A 1 carat ring on a limited budget may not rate very highly in other areas, taking away from its overall beauty.
    • Color: The color of diamonds varies considerably and most people prefer a very white colored diamond for an engagement ring. Colors are graded from D (colorless and rare) and most good quality diamonds will be around F and H and grades D to I are acceptable to buy as they are almost identical when mounted.
    • Clarity: Being natural, there will be imperfections in the diamond. The less imperfections, the greater the clarity and the more light is reflected from the diamond, causing it to "sparkle". Naturally, more clarity increases its value. Perfectly flawless diamonds with no internal flaws or surface blemishes are very hard to find as they are extremely rare. Fewer flaws in a diamond result in greater brilliance as more light is reflected.[4]
      • The scale used to grade clarity goes from F1 for a flawless diamond, to VVS1 and VVS2 for very slight inclusions, to VS1 and VS2 for very slight inclusions, SI1 and SI2 for slight inclusions and I1, I2 and I3 for imperfect diamonds.
      • Diamonds are magnified by 10 times to judge their clarity so very slight imperfections are difficult to see with the naked eye. This means that there is a range of diamonds available even for more modest budgets. If you can see a mark without magnification, however, think carefully before you buy. The location and darkness of an imperfection of any given grade (though probably not any "VVS" inclusion, which is simply too small, and rarely a VS inclusion) can affect its visibility so it is safest to see the imperfection magnified or in a magnified photograph before buying.
    • Cut: There are different ways to cut a diamond, and the type of cut impacts the sparkle of the diamond. The cut that produces the most sparkle is the round (or brilliant) cut, while radiant and princess cuts are good at hiding flaws. Other cuts including square, emerald, pear, marquise, cushion, ssscher, and heart-shaped.[5] The oval shape looks best with larger stones, and looks bigger than the round cut.[6] A high-quality cut (not necessarily above "Ideal") is more important than weight or an extremely high clarity or color grade: a diamond, like a road reflector, shines light back out the direction it came in and breaks it up a bit in the process. If the sides are ground at the wrong angles (sometimes through less-than-perfect workmanship, sometimes to increase weight with extra width or depth) quite a bit of light will not shine back out the right way--much more than would be lost to a very faint yellowish or brown tint or a speck visible under a loupe. It is also important to base your selection of diamonds based on objective data such as ASET or Idealscope images that you can acquire from your jeweler.[7] This is particularly important if you are buying a diamond engagement ring online.
  9. 8
    Decide by how it looks.
    Decide by how it looks.
Decide by how it looks. Once you've covered the cost, the durability and the practicality of the ring, it's down to how the ring looks.
    • Look for a ring that is out of the ordinary. This isn't an everyday ring; it's the engagement ring, the ring your beloved will treasure lifelong and wear most days for the rest of your life together.
    • If you're choosing one together, let your girlfriend have the final say.
  10. 9
    Purchase the ring.
    Purchase the ring.
Purchase the ring. Collect it just before the proposal. That way you can avoid worrying about keeping it safely.
    • Be sure to check that your insurance covers its loss, or ask for insurance from the jeweler's store if available.
    • Ask for a certificate of authenticity and a warranty to accompany the ring. Certificates are very useful to collect with a diamond to find out exactly where they originated from. They are usually only available with the purchase of diamonds larger than just under 1 carat. For smaller diamonds, a certificate would add a considerable amount to the cost of the stone as you may end up paying an extra several hundreds of dollars or pounds to obtain one.
    • Insure! The ring is likely to be the most expensive piece of jewelry you have ever bought, and the most expensive piece of jewelry your fiance (we hope) has ever worn. To prevent her from having to give it up for appraisal and insurance when she's just getting used to wearing it, get it done before you pop the question.
    • Set off - it's time to propose!

Choose the Right Bag for Your Body

No More Unflattering Lengths or Sizes!

    By , About.com Guide

You probably don't give handbags the same scrutiny you give a pair of jeans: if a handbag is cute or fits your lifestyle then it works.
But did you know that a handbag can flatter your shape almost as much as the right pair of jeans?
Apply these easy steps to getting bag in proportion to your figure. It can not only knock off pounds visually (no kidding!), it'll polish up your style in a flash.

    Shapes

If you are trying to play down a body type, choose a shape that is the opposite of your body silhouette. For example, if you are very tall and thin, you can add a slouchy, rounded hobo bag to add some curves to your figure. If you're short and voluptous, play off opposites by choosing a handbag that is tall and rectangular or long and sleek (like a clutch).
In general, the rounder your figure, the more structured your bag should be. That doesn't mean that you have to carry a hard box around to counterbalance your womanly shape: rectangular or square silhouettes in soft leathers or fabrics will do the trick. For example, a petite, curvy figure (like Kim Kardashian has) would look great carrying a large rectangular clutch bag.
Are you confused by the terminology when it comes to handbags? Here are some popular shapes:
    • Tote - An open-top bag with straps or handles.
    • Hobo bag - A crescent-shaped shoulder bag. This style is often soft and slouchy.
    • Duffle - Tall shoulderbag, often with a wider opening on top.
    • Field bag - A flap-top shoulderbag with utility-type closure (buckles, snaps, etc).
    • Clutch - A small, handheld bag or a larger, geometric shape that is tucked under the arm or carried in your hand.
    • Satchel- A large, handheld bag. Many satchels are structured.
    • Baguette - Long and rounded shoulder bag resembling the namesake bread.
    • Messenger - A large, soft shoulder bag with long straps (often worn across the body).
    • Cigar Box - A small, boxy, hard bag.
    • Pouch - A soft, small bag.
    • Kelly bag - A classic Hermes style named after Grace Kelly; a large, structured handbag with distinctive hardware closures.
    • Crossbody bag - A bag -- often smaller in size -- that is worn across the body at an angle.

    Scale

Will the right bag make you look thinner? Not exactly, but it can flatter your shape. While the shape should oppose your body type for maximum flattery, the size of the bag should be in proportion to your figure.
Think scale here: a woman who is 6 feet tall and a size 14 would look lost with a teensy hand-held bag. A petite size 0 would look overwhelmed by an enormous slouchy bag.
A shoulder bag's length (where the bottom of the bag hits your body) will accentuate whatever part of the body it comes near.
For example, a shoulder bag that ends around the hips will play up your hip width (the eye is drawn to the bag).
Most women look great with a bag that hits mid-torso because it flatters the waist.
Crossbody bags are difficult to carry off for busty women because the strap cuts right across the bustline.

    Tips

    • Take time in a store to try on handbags in front of a mirror just like you would apparel.
    • Don't be tempted by trendy shapes that don't suit your figure: there are plenty of great alternatives that will work.
    • Think lifestyle when shopping for handbags: if you're toting diapers and graham crackers, an artsy vintage bag won't hold up.

Back to Basics – How to Accessorize Your Wardrobe

Back to Basics – How to Accessorize Your Wardrobe

Whether you are a city slicker, suburbanite, or county dweller one thing remains constant: it’s hot, humid and sticky outside!  It’s that time of year where keeping cool and looking stylish is not an easy task to pull off.  While it is very fashionable to layer garments in the fall and winter seasons, you often find yourself stripping down to the bare essentials in order to keep cool through the summer months.  The good news is that there is a way to stay both cool and stylish through summer and it doesn’t involve nudity.  Accessories can play an important role in your summer wardrobe when used correctly. Whether you want to spice up a top tank or maximize the potential of your summer work wardrobe, accessories are a great way to stay chic.
Fashionable accessories can add many different ingredients to your outfit including color, shape, personality, and creativity.  Belts, jewelry, shoes, handbags, and hats are all accessories that play an important role in your wardrobe. With all the different shapes, textures, colors and styles available, such accessories can help create a fresh summer look without breaking the bank on new clothes.  By using these items you can wear a single outfit in a multitude of different ways.  For example:
    • Shoes can instantly transform a garment into sexy or casual.  Adding a pump, peep toe, or stiletto to any outfit will instantly sex it up for an evening out on the town.  Platforms, sandals, and flip-flops will automatically shift your ensemble into casual mode.
    • Colored glass beads and fashion necklaces provide added color to any basic top or dress. Big chunky necklaces are a great way to reinvent a basic tank top, print, or T-shirt.
    • Handbags add character to a basic outfit.  Whether it is a large oversized tote or a signature novelty bag, one should never overlook the importance of a remarkable bag!   Using a large handbag instead of a clutch can transform your dress from classy to casual.
    • Colored belts will transform any basic top and bottom combination.  For example, take a black top tucked into a pair of black pants and throw a green, yellow, or red belt into your belt hoops.  It will instantly add an accent color that you can base your other accessories around.  This will work with most basic and neutral combinations.
    • Accessories can also be used to transition an outfit from one occasion to another.  You can take a day look, for instance, add the right accessories and reinvent it into an evening look.   If you have a dress that is inappropriate for work, throw a button cardigan overtop or a fitted blazer. Paired with a trendy or staple handbag and a comfortable pump or flat, you are office ready in no time!
    • Once you experiment with various accessories and find the ones that suit you best, the possibilities to keep each outfit stylish are endless.   Here are some ways to use accessories to compliment your casual, business, and dressy summer wardrobe.
    CASUAL –
Style is often sacrificed when finding a casual outfit to wear during a hot summer day. Luckily, accessories can add a number of stylish components to your casual summer wear.  An easy way to spruce up any solid-colored or basic fitted tee, tank, tube or halter top, is to wear a neckpiece that adds embellishment.  The length of the necklace can be used to elongate the shape of the torso.  A necklace that sits between the belly button and chest is a fail-proof length that will help create the illusion of a more slenderized figure.  To add a fashionable touch, find a necklace that is colorful and stands out against your shirt.  Play around with different styles, thicknesses and materials when choosing a neckpiece.  If you are top heavy, thinner styles will work better. If you are petite try shorter and thicker styles.

Since it is common to go sleeveless or short sleeved in the summer, accessorize your arms to jazz up your look.  Chunky bracelets, bangles and watches add presence and style.  Don’t get crazy and add too much but certainly try to mix and match.  If you have a few silver bangles try adding them all together on one wrist.  If you have some beaded bracelets in different colors try combining a few together. Stacking wooden bracelets is a great way to achieve a bohemian or earthy look, whereas stacking colorful bracelets can look youthful and fun.
Belts are a great accessory to take your daily look from boring to bright.  Denim shorts paired with a basic white tank top becomes a totally different outfit by throwing on a wide colorful belt with a large buckle.  There are many options for belts, such as high-waist belts that sit under the bust, mid-section belts that cinch you in at the waist and low-waist belts that elongate your torso.  Belts are adjustable and comfortable, making them a must-have accessory for everyday!
There is plenty of stylish and comfortable footwear available that you can factor into your look.  For example, summer footwear such as wedges, platforms or ballerina-style flats that are embellished with jewels and hardware can visually enhance any basic outfit.  Not only are fashionable flats easily available, but they can be found at affordable prices and are the most comfortable.  Heavy shoes for summer are simply unacceptable.  There is no need to wear big heavy sneakers, clogs, mules, crocs, or hiking sandals in the midst of summer.  Your feet should be housed in something light, feminine, and airy!
A definite splurge item to have for the summer is a fashionable pair of sunglasses.  Just as gloves are a key style accessory for the winter season, sunglasses are a summer must have.  Designer shades are a good investment if you plan to wear them for multiple summers.  Otherwise, you can find many fashionable styles at affordable price points.  Shades are an accessory that can be used to show your personality, so experiment with the different shapes, colors, sizes, frames and details to find the pair that best suits you!  Ultimately, sunglasses should sit higher than your eyebrow and should fall below your cheek bone.
    OFFICE -
Depending on your working environment, what’s acceptable office attire will vary based on the individual and office dress code.  If you are limited to two piece suits or separates, then you can still add some personality to your career wardrobe. By incorporating the right accessories, you can add excitement to any basic corporate look.
Using an accessory like a thin belt will make your office attire appear very chic and stylish.  It will help tie in your separates and add a subtle shot of color around your waist.  If you wear a dress to the office, try adding a thicker belt with stretch just under the bust area around your high waist. This is the smallest area on any woman’s body.  Emphasizing this area is a slimming way to accessorize an otherwise indistinctive dress. Try to avoid belts that are too wide and too busy, as they are not professional or suitable for the work environment.  In a more business casual environment, add belts with different textures and rich colors to your attire, but keep them tasteful and simple.
Jewelry worn in the workplace should add to the overall quality of your look.  Pieces should be thin, subtle and fine to accent a well-polished look.  Avoid flashy colors, distracting prints or cheap-looking materials.  Even for the business casual environment, avoid jewelry that is too flashy or bright.  Instead, choose muted color tones such as silver, gold, or materials such as fine stones and antique beads.  Also, fashion watches are a great way to add some flare to your work outfits. Be sure to avoid wearing too many bangles or bracelets on one arm as they can be noisy and distracting to colleagues.
Despite the summer heat, avoid open toe or strappy shoes.  Casual Friday does not mean flip flops and halter tops.  Save them for the beach! Just make sure your shoes are not worn-out or over-embellished.  With neutral work outfits, suits, or suit separates try adding a colored pump to your ensemble.  If you wear black or grey bottoms everyday to work, this will help you look more current.  Go through the work tops in your closet and find a consistent color theme.  Select a colored pump that will match most of your tops when paired with a dark bottom!  If your bottom is a knee length skirt or a dress pant, you should always wear a closed-toe shoe.  The length of the heel should not exceed 3 inches, as it can be inappropriate for the work environment.  In a business casual setting, it is a great idea to wear flat shoes that are clean and presentable.  They can be worn barefoot or with comfortable ped socks.  Avoid heavier hosiery that will add heat and sweat.  It is never a good idea to wear skirts or dresses above the knee in the office.
The basic rule of thumb is “more is less”. Over accessorizing can kill your outfit and distract people around you. Accessories should be used to accent your outfit and should not be the focus of your outfit.  By adding the right ones, you can create a more tasteful and subtle appearance.
    EVENING -
Evening affairs are a great occasion to make a memorable fashion statement.  Accessories play a key role in spicing up your style while keeping you cool for those warm summer soirees!  Add a prominent neckpiece that sits on your chest when wearing a strapless top or dress.  Not only will this fill up the area that bares a lot of skin, but it will also accent your outfit and draw attention to your facial features.  The same can be done to tops or dresses with straps and deeper necklines such as scoop and V-necks.  If the top-half of your outfit is a solid color absent from any busy prints, embellishments or details, then add a longer necklace to jazz up that area.
If you choose to keep your neck simple or bare, then add signature earrings.  If you have a loud or busy necklace, keep your earrings as simple as possible. If you want to stay cool by wearing your hair pulled back, a note-worthy earring is the key accessory to enhance your look.  To elongate your face and neck, wear a lengthier earring or one that dangles.
Jewelry is available in various styles, so it is important to select pieces according to a particular evening occasion.  When attending a fancy event, choose a fine necklace, a thin bracelet and a pair of subtle earrings to add an elegant sparkle to your look.  In contrast, a colorful neckpiece with some chunky bangles and playful earrings will create a trendy look for date night.
A great pair of high heels is a must-have summer item.  By putting on heels, you instantly appear slimmer, taller and sexier.  It is easy to make heels the focal point of your outfit when sporting a simple look, as they are available in many interesting prints, colors, fabrics, and styles.  The heel is a powerful accessory because it often dictates how other accessories will be tied into an outfit.  For example, if you are wearing a zebra-print heel with a simple white outfit, you can coordinate the look with silver jewelry and a black clutch to emphasize the zebra print.  Not only does a great pair of heels upgrade your outfit, it also heightens your confidence!  Just make sure you choose a heel height that is comfortable enough to walk in without wobbling!
    Where to buy -
Many retail stores carry fashion accessories.  If there is a store that you frequent regularly for clothing pieces, then next time you are shopping for a garment see what jewelry options they have.

    Fall and Winter Fashion Jewelry

    By

The cooler days and darker evenings means that the style-conscious lady's thoughts are turning towards fall and winter fashion jewelry. But what are the best items of jewelry to wear during the chilly winter months?
Surprisingly, jewelry can be seasonal! Although many items of jewelry have year round appeal, some pieces of jewelry are better suited to certain seasons. Short sleeved blouses and t-shirts, for instance, look great with delicate bracelets and bangles that might otherwise get hidden from view under jumpers and sweaters. A heavyweight brooch will look stunning on a woolen jacket, yet would pull a light silk jacket out of shape. Almost without knowing it, many people naturally gravitate to specific types of jewelry to fit the season.

Best Types of Fall and Winter Fashion Jewelry

The cooler months of fall and winter are the time to wrap up warmly! Jumpers, sweaters and cardigans replace summer tops and hats, scarves and gloves can be seasonal essentials. Finding the right fashion jewelry that will look great with a winter wardrobe is very much down to personal style. There are a few guidelines, however, that will help create a winter look that is both stylish and practical.

    Big and Bold

The fall and winter are the times to think big and bold when it comes to jewelry. Now is not the time to be wearing tiny delicate earrings or pendants. Very small items of jewelry will get hidden under layers of heavy woolen jumpers and scarves therefore for an item of fall and winter fashion jewelry to really show it needs to be relatively large.

    Colorful

A few accent pieces of jewelry in bright and vibrant shades can bring a touch of glamor to a winter wardrobe. Many winter clothes are dark or neutral in color - add a splash of red or turquoise for a really stunning effect. A beautiful ring for instance with a bright gemstone cabochon can add just the right amount of contrasting color to lift an otherwise dull outfit and give some added interest to an overall image. There are many naturally colored gemstones that will look great for winter wear. The mauves and purples of amethyst for instance look great with neutral shades as well as darker colors.

    Sparkle

Fall and winter fashion jewelry also needs a bit of a sparkle to make it really stand out! Even fairly small earrings or necklaces can stand out from a winter outfit if there is a sparkling stone or bead to catch the eye. Winter is the perfect time to wear stones with a special sparkle and this needn't be just for the Holiday season. One thing to remember, however, when picking fashion jewelry with crystals or other sparkling stones is that less is more! A couple of accent pieces work best and gives a very effective look.

    Unusual Jewelry

Winter is also a great time to think about more unusual fashion jewelry and perhaps consider some different ways to wear jewelry, taking advantage of the season. Hats, for instance, create a wonderful opportunity to show off jewelry in a more unusual way. Small brooches or pins can be used to decorate a hat and can turn even a plain knitted hat into something a little special. Strings of beads can be worn around the wrist as a bracelet or small charms hung from bags. Belts also offer an interesting way to add glamor to an outfit and many stylish people can be seen with jewelry charms attached to a belt buckle.

    Top Fall 2012 Jewelry Trends:

It’s almost September and you know what that means- Autumn!  Why is this so exciting?  With the changing seasons also comes the change in fashion trends!  While you’re breaking out those sweaters and scarves don’t forget about accessorizing.  Investing in a few of these fun new pieces of jewelry will help update any fall wardrobe.  Below are the top three jewelry fashion trends for this upcoming season!
    1.  Creamy Colored Jewelry:
Pearls are perhaps one of the most classic types of jewelry.  This fall, pearls are featured as one of the most popular jewelry trends.  White and creamy colored pearls are a neutral so they pair well with almost any outfit.  Wearing  a pearl strand or pearl earrings this fall will add a touch of elegance to any outfit.
Rose gold jewelry is making a huge comeback!  The warm tone that rose gold exhibits is perfect for the fall season.  Featured in an array of pieces from watches to rings, you can decide how much rose gold is right for you.  Below are a couple of beautiful examples of rose gold jewelry we currently have at Colonial Jewelers:

Shell and coral jewelry is another front runner for the “flesh toned” trend this fall.  Mother of pearl is one of my personal favorite materials used in jewelry because of its beautiful iridescent qualities.  Mother of pearl jewelry can be obtained at any price point, whether it is featured as a necklace, ring, or as the dial of a Rolex.
    2. Nature Inspired Jewelry:
Pieces with a feathery or leafy shape to them have gained great popularity throughout the summer of 2012 and are predicted to remain a “must have” well throughout the fall as well.  Necklace pendants and earrings are my two favorite ways to show off this trend.
Animal print jewelry is also a fun and unique look that you will begin to see even more of this fall- and not just leopard print!  Check out these python and giraffe inspired Pandora beads that were just released a few months ago:

If this look is a little too wild for you, sporting a watch with a nice alligator skin embossed leather band is a classic but ever popular look.
Floral accent jewelry is last, but certainly not least, in the nature inspired jewelry category.  Engagement rings with tulip heads, rings with floral filigree and necklace pendants are just a few of the pieces we currently have that follow the floral trend.
    3.  Vintage Inspired Jewelry:
Cameos are rising in popularity this fall, and they aren’t just used on brooches anymore.  Necklace pendants, earrings and even bracelets featuring cameos have already started hitting the runway this year.  While cameos featuring face profiles are traditionally most popular, landscape cameos offer a really unique look.
Tying into the floral filigree trend, engraving and milgraining are featured in many new pieces of jewelry this fall.  Ornate details give a look to jewelry, especially rings, that is reminiscent of the early 1900′s.
With plenty of trends to choose from this fall season it should be easy to find a few new pieces that match your personal style.

How to Select the Perfect Pendant for Someone Special

    By

Giving someone a pendant for their birthday, Christmas, as a thank you, or just to show them you care is a lovely gift. Like rings, there are so many to choose from and the decision on what to pick can seem overwhelming. By following a few simple tips, you'll be able to take the stress out of shopping for a pendant for that special someone and pick the best one to suit them.
    Consider their style
The first thing to do is consider the style of jewellery the person you are buying for already has. Take note if they wear silver, gold, titanium or lots of colourful gemstone jewellery or pearls.
Everyone has their own unique style and when it comes to jewellery there are many different styles and designs.
    Consider their existing jewellery
Once you have got an idea of their own personal style, take note of what jewellery they already have. What you buy for them should compliment their other jewellery items.
A good idea is to even buy them a matching pendant to a favourite pair of earrings or ring they have.
    Types of pendants
There are many different types of pendants and depending on their personal style and the jewellery they already have you may want to get them something to match their other jewellery or perhaps something they mentioned they liked they saw.
Gemstone pendants can look classical or more contemporary, depending on what you're after. You may even want to consider buying them a pendant with their birthstone included in the design if you are looking for a gemstone pendant.
Hearts in both silver and gold, encrusted with diamonds or decorated with patterns are always a great classic style of pendant. Pearl pendants similarly do not date and are sure to be worn for years to come.
Will you buy it with a chain too?
Depending on the pendant, you may want to also buy a chain to match it. If however they have a few plain chains you know will match, there is no need to purchase one.

    Pendants for friends
There are some great pendants perfect for that special friend. While a traditional heart is always nice, you may want something in the shape of their favourite animal, or includes their favourite colour in the design.
    Pendants for partners
Shopping for an engagement ring when there are so many diamond rings to choose from can be stressful. Shopping for the perfect pendant is no different. Keep to the classic styles to make it easier and to choose something timeless. For something special, buy her a pendant that symbols love or two adjoining pendants, one for both of you.

What Is the Strongest Chain to Wear With Pendants?

The perfect pendant is a lovely and versatile piece of jewelry. Worn on a chain, the pendant can hang low around the neck, or high at the collar. Choosing a chain to wear with a favorite pendant is important for several reasons. The styles of your pendant and chain must be complementary in color, size, and style. The chain must be strong enough to support the pendant. Finding the strongest chain to wear with pendants is key to getting the most out of your jewelry collection

    Choosing Chain Metal

    • Strong jewelry chains can be made from a variety of metals. For the strongest, most secure chain for your pendant, choose gold in a color that complements your pendant. White gold will match a silver, platinum, or white gold pendant, and will complement many stone or gemstone pendants beautifully. Choose a gold chain of at least 14 karats, for a combination of strength and long-lasting shine. Silver is typically less expensive, but the metal can tarnish and become discolored.

    Choosing Chain Link Style

    • The links of your chain must be strong, as well as aesthetically pleasing in combination with your pendant. Box link, wheat chain and curb chain are simple types of chain link that are both flexible and strong without bulk that may overpower your pendant. Chains with link styles that are less flexible are also less strong, especially when it comes to items you hope to wear frequently. Your pendant may stress the inflexible links, and despite the sturdy appearance of serpentine, rope or herringbone chains, these are not the strongest options for most pendants. For a more delicate, feminine look that does not sacrifice strength, a figaro chain is an excellent option, but may not work with a heavier, stone pendant.

    Choosing a Clasp

    • The clasp or closure of a pendant chain is a frequent point of weakness, and the style must be chosen with great care. The clasp must be well made enough to withstand frequent opening and closing, but is must be easy to work with as well. Most moderately priced chains will have a spring-loaded ring and hoop closure. These can be made quite small and some are difficult to work with. The hoop and ring must be solid and connected to the chain with no visible cracks or openings. A larger, somewhat easier to work with clasp is called the lobster clasp. The box clasp has a tongue that slides into a box and clicks closed, then opens again when the box is squeezed. A higher-end, well-made box clasp with a thin safety chain included is considered the most secure style of clasp, and a smart choice for a particularly valuable pendant. The clasp to look out for is the magnetic variety, which are very easy to close and open but often fall off during use, especially when paired with a charm or pendant.

    Buying Tips

    • To find the strongest chain to wear with a favorite pendant, bring it along to a jeweler. Look carefully for a color match or complement, and compromise where price and style make it necessary. Some pendants will look lovely with a contrasting metal chain, others will not. The length of the chain you buy for a particular pendant will depend on the size of the pendant and personal style. A large, flat pendant may work best resting at the throat on a short chain, or hanging low onto the front of the chest. When choosing a longer chain, watch out for chains that kink easily due to link style or craftsmanship. Undoing kinks in a chain can cause breakage at the links, negating the strength of the metal or clasp style.

    How to Determine Bracelet Size

There are several ways to determine the size to order, but in every case, the measurements refer to the circumference of the bracelet. Use the photos and descriptions below to help you determine the correct size. When you contact me with the size you have determined, be sure to let me know which method you used.

I have some tips if you are buying a gift and want to determine the size to order without giving away the secret!
To determine size, you will need a flexible measuring tape. A dressmaker's measuring tape (shown at the top) will work well. If you do not have one, cut a strip of thick paper (cardstock works well) and use a ruler to mark lengths in quarter inch increments.
Here I have wrapped the cardstock ruler around my wrist so that it is comfortably touching the wrist all around. The ruler indicates "6-3/4" which would be too tight for a bracelet, but is useful to know, if that is the only measurement you can take.
I have opened up the ruler slightly to find a comfortable size. This is where personal preference comes into play. Decide whether you prefer your bracelet to remain fairly stationary, or to move freely up and down your wrist. There is usually a range of sizes that will fit. In general, adding 1/2 inch to the actual wrist measurement (shown above) will be a good fit. For instance, I can wear a 7 and a 7-1/2, but prefer the feel of 7-1/4.
If you have a rigid bracelet, bangle, or cuff that fits, you can use the flexible ruler to find the size. Adjust the ruler so that it has the same circumference as the bracelet. In the photo you can see that the ruler held over one of my own bracelets measures 7-1/4.
You can also use the ruler to measure the inside circumference of a bracelet that fits well. Here you can see that this results in a slightly smaller measurement. This can be easier than the previous step; if you take this measurement, be sure to let me know so I can make the adjustment. NOTE: A measurement of the outer circumference is NOT useful!
This is the sizing tool I use when I make bracelets.
And here is the same tool held over my bracelet. Their circumferences are the same and the tool shows a size of 7-1/4, as determined with the cardstock ruler shown above.

Tips for Keeping a Gift Secret

If you live with the intended recipient, try to find a bracelet that you know the recipient likes and use the instructions above to determine the size. A tightly fitting watch band can also be used in a pinch. Measure either the inside or the actual circumference and be sure to let me know which measurement you took. If you do not live with the recipient, perhaps you can enlist the help of someone who does. If there is no way for you to measure either a watch or bracelet, then make your best guess; I am always happy to exchange a bracelet for the correct size, just be sure to contact me first. In general, most women will be in the range of 6-3/4 to 7-1/4. If you think your recipient's wrists are larger than average, try ordering a 7-1/2 or 7-3/4. Finally, while I can make any size, very tiny sizes (less than 6-1/2) pose special challenges for some of my designs; be sure to contact me first!

How to Find the Correct Ring Size

After selecting the perfect wedding rings to signify your lifetime of love, you’ll need to make sure you have them sized correctly so they’ll fit comfortably. Here’s the best way to find your ring size. Use a piece of string no wider than ¼ of an inch and wrap it around the base of your ring finger. Next, mark the point when the string meets itself, making sure the string can slide over the knuckle. Then, use a ruler to measure the length of the string from its tip to the mark. Now, match that measurement to the following ring sizes: 46.5 mm, size 4; 47.8 mm, size 41/2; 49 mm, size 5; 50.3 mm, size 51/2; 51.5 mm, size 6; 52.8 mm, size 61/2; 54 mm, size 7; 55.3 mm, size 71/2; 56.6 mm, size 8; 57.8 mm, size 81/2; 59.1 mm, size 9; 60.3 mm, size 91/2; 61.6 mm, size 10; 62.8 mm, size 101/2; 64.1 mm, size 11; 65.3 mm, size 111/2; 66.6 mm, size 12; 67.9 mm, size 121/2 and 69.1 mm is a size 13.
    How Should My Ring Fit?
Typically, jewelers recommend that your ring be comfortable and movable with no swelling on either side of the ring. Also, you should be able to slide a toothpick between your finger and the ring. Lastly, your ring should slide snugly over your knuckle—which is usually the largest part of your finger—but not so snugly that you have to really force it on. Think of your knuckle as a sort of barrier that will keep you from losing your ring.

Quick Tips for Choosing the Right Size Ring
Since your fingers swell and shrink, depending on the temperature and the time of day, jewelers suggest measuring your ring finger at room temperature at the end of the day when it will be the closest to its normal size.

Also, it’s good to remember that the wider the band you select, the tighter your ring will fit. So, you may need to size up a bit—maybe a ¼--from your normal ring size. Many people don’t realize you can order rings in ¼ sizes, but you can. So, if a 6 is too small, and a 61/2 is too big, opt or the 61/4.

Once you receive your ring, try wearing it a few days before determining if it’s the right size or not. Remember, temperature, your sodium intake and the time of day will all affect how your ring fits.

Ring sizing is not an absolute science; it’s actually all about personal preference. So, if you choose to wear your ring a little tighter than what’s recommended, so be it. You’re the boss.

How To Choose The Right Length Necklace

How To Choose The Right Length Necklace

Necklaces come in a wide variety of lengths. The length of a necklace was once attributed to specific age groups or classes. However, currently choosing the right necklace length is a matter of personal taste.
Collar necklaces are between 12 and 13 inches in length. Necklaces of this length will fit snuggly around the center of the neck. Collar necklaces are often made up of three or more strands of necklaces. They are an ideal accessory when wearing off the shoulder or low v-neck attire.
A choker necklace is usually between 14 and 16 inches long. This is a very traditional and versatile length. It can compliment almost any out fit and neckline. In addition it can easily be dressed up or down, depending on what it is paired with.
Anything longer than 16 inches is generally classified as a long necklace.
The princess necklace is typically between 17 and 19 inches long. This is the most common length for a necklace, with the end falling right at the collarbone. This length works well for low cut and crew necklines. This is the length you should purchase if you cannot decide which length will work best for you.
The matinee necklace is between 20 and 25 inches long. This length necklace works well for business or casual attire. It exudes confidence and sophistication. This length usually works best with a high neckline.
The opera necklace is a lengthy 26 to 36 inches long. This length is best worn with evening wear, preferably with a high neckline. Because of it length this necklace can be worn is several ways. It can be worn as a single strand, or doubled to create a two-strand choker. It can also be tied in a knot around the bust line to portray a more vintage look.
A rope necklace is typically 37 inches or longer. This necklace can be worn as a single strand or doubled for a two-strand choker. It can usually be tripled to create a three-strand choker as well. A rope necklace may be knotted at the bust, or even worn backwards to compliment a backless number. Rope necklaces are often made with several clasps. The multiple clasps allow the rope to be broken down into separate combinations. It is often worn as a necklace and bracelet.
A lariat necklace is 48 inches or longer. This length of necklace is popular for pearl lovers. This strand is usually unattached t the ends to allow the wearer to knot or wrap it in whatever manner suits them.
Some necklaces have adjustable lengths. They have extra links near the clasp that can be added or removed to adjust the length of the necklace. These necklaces are good for people who are not sure which length is right for them, or if you are giving the necklace as jewelry.
When shopping for a specific length necklace you should ask the jeweler if the clasp is included in the measurement. This is particularly important if you are buying the necklace online or through a catalogue where you cannot try it on first. The clasp will generally add anywhere for three- fourths of an inch to a full inch, so it is important to know if it is included in the overall length.
The best way to determine which length necklace works best for you is to try it on, if you can. Necklaces hang differently on different body types. In addition, you should try to visualize the outfit you intend to wear the piece with. Keep in mind the necklace may look great in the store, but may not compliment the attire you plan to pair it with.

Diamond or Cubic Zirconia: Knowing the difference can save you money!

Learn why cubic zirconia has been recognized as a beautiful synthetic gemstone that has quickly become a desirable substitute for diamond. Knowing the difference between diamond and cubic zirconia can help you make better purchasing decisions and in turn, save you time and money.
So what is the difference between diamond and cubic zirconia? Why is cubic zirconia (CZ) quickly becoming more popular as a desirable substitute for diamond? Gemologists can agree that CZ comes closer than any other gem material to matching the characteristics of a diamond.
Most people, even trained gemologists, cannot tell the difference between diamond and CZ, with the naked eye. Moreover, to the untrained eye, CZ looks identical to a good quality diamond. However, under closer inspection, CZ appears to have slightly less brilliance (or sparkle) than a diamond, and more fire, or flashes of color.

CZs were originally developed by the Russians, for their space program. They were developed as an alternative to diamonds that were used in the optics of their lasers. CZs have a refractive index, dispersion and hardness so close to a diamond it's uncanny.
So what are some key features that can guide you in telling the difference between diamond and CZ? Do keep in mind, though, in order to accurately distinguish the two gems, gemological equipment such as microscope, or loupe, must be used for testing and verification.
To start, let's take a look at the hardness factor: Did you know CZ ranges between 8.5 to 9.0 on the Mohs' hardness scale, whereas diamond, one of the hardest materials known to man, is rated 10, lying at the top of the hardness scale?
Furthermore, glass (or sand) is rated approximately 5 to 6 on the hardness scale, therefore, dust and dirt will not scratch CZ. Indeed, CZ can scratch glass just like regular diamonds, making it more resistant to chipping.
One great difference between diamond and CZ is weight. CZs are heavyweights in comparison to diamonds; a CZ will weigh approximately 1.75 times more than a diamond of equivalent size. So basically, a piece of CZ the same size as a one-carat diamond weighs about 1.75 carats. Well...isn't that interesting?
Contemporary production of CZ is virtually flawless, whereas diamond usually contains impurities and inclusions, or have some sort of defect, be it a feather, included crystal, or perhaps a remnant of an original crystal face (e.g. trigons).
In regards to color-more precisely, the lack of color—only the rarest of diamonds are truly colorless, as most have a tinge of yellow or brown to some extent. By comparison, CZ in most cases can be made entirely colorless, equivalent to a perfect "D" on diamond's color grading scale.

Also, under close inspection with a loupe, the facet shapes of some CZs appear different from diamonds. Both gems disperse light a little differently. Dispersion is just a scientific term for the breaking up of light into its spectral colors. With a dispersive power greater than diamond (0.060 vs. 0.044), the more prismatic fire of CZ can be seen by even an untrained eye.
Dispersion occurs based on the gem's refractive index. In this case, refractive index simply indicates how much a beam of light will bend, based on the direction in which it is traveling when it passes between two materials of different optical densities (such as between diamond and air; or between CZ and air). Being that CZ has a refractive index of 2.176, compared to a diamond's 2.417, diamonds are therefore said to be brighter than CZ.
Another difference between the two gems is that CZs are thermal insulators—meaning, they reduce the rate of heat transfer—whilst diamonds are among the most efficient thermal conductors—meaning, they allow heat to easily pass through them. Without testing the gems' heat conductivity, it can be difficult to tell them apart.
Remember, it is a 50/50 guess to identify a gem by visual inspection; it is not a scientific method of authentication. That is why even certified and degreed gemologists use gemological equipment for testing and verification.
You will also be glad to know that CZs are not only durable and inexpensive, but just like diamonds, they come in any color of the rainbow, making them even more desirable.
There have been many instances to see if jewelers can tell the difference between diamond and cubic zirconia, just by examining the gems with the naked eye. Over and over again, it was inconclusive; jewelers could not tell the difference just by looking at the gems. So you can now understand why the difference between diamond and cubic zirconia rests in the price, and in the mind...

    Jewelry metal information

     by - Gillett's Jewellers

What you need to know about jewelry metals

There are several metals used in the creation of fine jewelry. By knowing information about the different metals, their benefits compared with each other and their unique qualities you will be able to make a better and more informed decision about purchasing your jewelry.
The metal types commonly used to make jewelry include gold, platinum, titanium, silver and stainless steel. Metals including rhodium and palladium are also used with jewelry.
Below you will find information about each of these metal types, together with information about which metals are best for particular types of jewelry.

    Gold

Ladies gold wedding ringsGold is the most popular choice for men's and ladies wedding rings and engagement rings. Gold is also very popular in dress rings, earrings, pendants, necklaces and bracelets.
There are two things to consider when looking at gold. First, which gold carat to choose and second, the gold color or the combination of gold colors available.

    Gold carat

There are several carats available for gold.
The carat is the gold content of the metal. The carat measures the proportion of pure gold mixed with other metal alloy to make up the final metal.
18kt yellow gold diamond engagement ring The carat of gold is represented in many countries by the abbreviation ct. Carat can also be called karat, represented by kt or K.
You may notice that carat or ct is also used to measure the weight of diamonds and gemstones. Although the same name is used, the two measurements are measuring different characteristics of jewelry.
The gold carats normally used in men's wedding rings are 9kt, 14kt and 18kt.
The higher the proportion of gold used in the final metal, the more valuable and expensive the metal will be. So all other things being the same, an 18kt ring will be more expensive than a 14kt ring and a 14kt ring will be more expensive than a 9kt ring.
Gold 9kt yellow gold wedding ring9kt gold contains 37.5% pure gold (375 parts per thousand parts).
14kt gold contains 58.5% pre gold (585 parts per thousand parts).
18kt gold contains 75% pure gold (750 parts per thousand parts).
18kt yellow gold wedding ringThe remainder of the metals is made up of a combination of alloys, different metals which can help to give the metal its unique appearance, such as a different color.
Other gold carats are used in different parts of the world including 10ct, 22ct and 24ct. It is generally considered that 22ct and 24ct gold are too soft to be used to make men's wedding rings.
10ct gold (417 parts pure gold per thousand parts) is very similar to 9kt gold and the reason why some countries use 9kt and other countries use 10ct is due to historical reasons, rather than one being superior to the other.
Jewelry is normally stamped with a marking to show the type of gold.
For 9kt gold the stamp will normally be either the number 375, 9kt, 9kt or 9K.
14kt yellow gold pendantFor 14kt gold the stamp will normally be either the number 585, 14kt, 14kt or 14K.
For 18kt gold the stamp will normally be either the number 750, 18kt, 18kt or 18K.
The stamps only indicate the carat of metal. They do not indicate the color of the metal. So for example an 18kt yellow gold ring would have a stamp of 750 as would an 18kt white gold ring.
9kt, 14kt and 18kt gold are each relatively hard and durable metals and are suitable for use in all types of fine jewelry. Gold is also suitable to be used in jewelry that is worn on an every day basis.
When choosing jewelry, particularly rings, many people consider the hardness and durability of gold to be used in their ring.
Metal hardness is measured by what is called the Vickers scale where harder metals receive a higher Vickers score than less hard metals.
9kt has a Vickers hardness of 120 and 18kt has a Vickers hardness of 125. This shows 18kt as harder, but the difference is so slight that in practical terms 9kt and 18kt are much the same in terms of hardness.
There is another difference that should be considered when comparing 9kt and 18kt. 9kt is more difficult to bend and is a little more springy and therefore a fine 9kt ring may be less likely to bend out of shape than a fine 18kt ring. However, if the ring is of a good sturdy construction neither metal will be likely to bend out of shape.

    Gold colors

White gold wedding rings Next you need to consider the color of gold.
Gold is available in several different colors. The most popular is yellow gold, followed by white gold and rose gold, though other gold colors are sometimes also available such as bronze, red and lime gold.
Tone tone white gold and yellow gold wedding rings Jewelry can also be made using a combination of different gold colors. These jewelry items are sometimes called two-tone, three-tone or multi-colored gold.

The gold content of yellow gold is measured in the same way it is measured in for example white gold. So an 18kt white gold ring contains 75% pure gold, just as 18kt yellow gold contains 75% pure gold.
The difference in color between yellow, white and rose is determined by the metals used in the alloy mix.
rose gold and white gold wedding ringAs the color difference is due to the metal components in the alloy mix, the color of yellow gold and rose gold will not chip, fade or wear off with age.
Yellow gold is made by mixing pure gold with alloy metals such as copper and zinc.
Rose gold is made using a mix of pure gold with alloys including copper. The copper provides the rose-reddish color.
White gold is an alloy of gold and some white metals such as silver and palladium.
18kt rose gold and yellow gold wedding ringsTraditionally nickel was used in white gold, however, nickel is no longer used in most white gold made today as nickel can cause reactions with some people. We do not use nickel in our white gold
When white gold rings are new they can be coated with another white metal called Rhodium. Rhodium is a metal very similar to platinum and rhodium shares many of the properties of platinum including its white color.
The rhodium plating is used to make the white gold look more white. The natural color of white gold is actually a light grey color. The rhodium is very white and very hard, but it does wear away eventually. To keep a white gold ring looking its best it should be re-rhodium plated approximately each 12 to 18 months. Most local jewelers are able to rhodium plate jewelry for a cost effective price.
white gold and rose gold wedding ringsAs each gold color contains the same proportion of pure gold all gold colors with the same carat weight when measured on the Vickers scale have the same Vickers score.
There can be a difference in color between the different carats of gold.
18kt yellow gold is more yellow than 9kt yellow gold with 18kt yellow gold having a richer golden color making 18kt yellow gold a more popular choice of yellow gold than 9kt for ladies engagement rings.
9kt rose gold has a darker rose-copper color than 18kt rose gold which has a more subtle rose color.
9kt white gold and 18kt white gold have a similar white color (as normally both have a rhodium plating finish.
When comparing the price of the gold colors in the same carat, white gold is normally a little more expensive than yellow gold and rose gold. Yellow gold and rose gold normally have approximately the same price.
White gold engagement ring When trying to decide between the gold carat types there are three things to consider.
    1. The metals performance with every day wear
    2. The difference in color between the 9kt, 14kt and 18kt gold
    3. The difference in price between the gold carats.
In practical terms, 18kt generally holds up to everyday wear better than 9kt and tends to look better than 9kt as it ages over the years. This is one of the reasons why 18kt is normally preferred for ladies engagement rings rather than 9kt.
18kt white gold diamond rings18kt is the superior metal for lady's and men's wedding rings provided that the ring is not a lightweight construction (Gillett's Jewellers rings are a good construction). However, 18kt is more expensive than 14kt and 9kt, which is usually fine for ladies engagement rings, though in a large men's ring the 18kt price can be a noticeable difference.
9kt, 14kt and 18kt are each suitable equally suitable for use in dress rings, earrings, pendants, bracelets and necklaces. Many people choose 9kt and 14kt for their earrings and pendants due to its lower price.

It is very strong, three times the strength of steel and much stronger than gold, silver and platinum and yet is very light weight. Pure titanium is also 100% hypo-allergenic which means that it if safe for anyone to wear as it will not react to your skin.
Titanium provides several unique factors that make it a good metal for jewelry. It is very strong, more dent, bend and scratch resistant than gold, silver and platinum, is lightweight and importantly offers an exotic array of colors which other metals simply do not.
Titanium and white gold wedding ring One factor to consider with titanium is that titanium cannot be soldered, which means that titanium rings cannot normally be resized.
Titanium rings made using pure titanium can normally be cut-off the finger in the event of an emergency, though they are more difficult to cut-off than gold, silver or platinum rings. Aircraft grade titanium rings normally cannot be cut-off in the event of an emergency.
Titanium is popular in earrings and bracelets for both ladies and men.
Quick Reference - What types of jewelry are suitable for titanium?

    Platinum

Platinum is a white metal, but unlike gold it is used in jewelry in almost its pure form (approximately 95% pure). Platinum is extremely long wearing and is very white, so it does not need to be rhodium plated like white gold does.
Platinum is very dense and heavy metal, so a platinum ring will feel heavier than an 18kt gold ring.
Platinum wedding ring Platinum is, however, significantly more expensive than gold. With all other things being the same, a platinum ring will be approximately twice the price of an 18kt white gold ring.
Platinum is a prestige choice and is often chosen for its sophisticated appeal and popularity amongst the rich and famous.

    Silver

Sterling silver is a white-grey colored metal which is less expensive than gold, platinum and titanium.
Silver is a softer metal than gold, titanium and platinum and does not have hardness that the other metals do.
Silver is a popular metal for use in jewelry such as earrings, pendants, bracelets, necklaces and dress rings. It is best used for jewelry that will not be worn every day for an extended period. For that reason it is usually not recommend to be chosen for ladies and men's wedding rings, and is not suitable for ladies engagement rings.

    Tungsten Carbide

Tungsten carbide, also referred to simply as tungsten, is a very hard, strong and durable metal. It's also quite heavy.
Tungsten carbide wedding ring Tungsten has a characteristic unique to this special metal - tungsten is highly scratch resistant.
Unlike gold, platinum and even titanium, tungsten rings do not scratch with everyday wear like the other metals do.
It is technically possible to scratch tungsten, though only with objects that are harder than tungsten. So that leaves diamonds, sapphires, rubies and ceramic. Though unless you dragged the tip of a loose diamond along the tungsten, the metal will stay scratch resistant.
Having a wedding band that's scratch resistant offers a lot of advantages.
Tungsten always looks new and bright and shiny. Tungsten offers what's referred to as a permanent polish, which means that it doesn't need to be re-polished. So, it doesn't need the polishing maintenance that gold, platinum and titanium rings do.
Tungsten stands up to the wear that even the roughest husbands can dish-out, making it a popular choice for men's wedding rings.
Tungsten has an appealing color which almost all men like. The tungsten color is a grey-white color, similar to that of white gold or titanium.
Tungsten is particularly popular in men's wedding rings.
The range of tungsten jewellery is generally more restricted than for other metals.
Tungsten rings cannot be resized (as tungsten can't be cut and resoldered), so it's important to have your finger size accuratley measured before buying a tungsten ring.
